When the owner of KICKS Tae Kwon Do & Fitness Centers, inc., Grandmaster Ronald Rose, first decided to open a martial arts studio, his main goal was to share the many benefits Tae Kwon Do has provided him on a day to day basis with children and adults of all ages. The doors to KICKS originally opened across from Northside Hardware in Wayne, MI in August of 1977. It was called the Wayne Karate Studio. Approximately 25 students signed up to learn Tae Kwon Do techniques from Grandmaster Rose who was the only instructor at that time.
The Wayne Karate Studio was located at the small location for two years and it consisted of only about 15 feet by 20 feet in space. Then the studio moved to a larger facility that was situated on west Michigan Avenue by the old phone company. It was big enough that they could install locker rooms and increase their student attendance.
Within one year of being established at the new location, KICKS attracted more than 75 students throughout the state including from places such as Rockwood, Jackson, Livonia and Rochester. The many accomplishments of the students and their passion for the sport soon reached several schools, businesses, and civic organizations. Because of this growth, Grandmaster Rose decided to increase the number of instructors at KICKS so he could offer more programs to his students.
In 1987, with the assistance of his wife, Professor Christine Rose, he started a tournament team with competitors preparing to compete in local, state and national competitions. The tournament team consisted of a very talented group of people who were intense about their training and accomplishments. In 1987, they started with only 12 members on the team and then it grew to over 60 people ranging in ages from 5 to 45 years old. The students concentrated on pursuing the sport of Tae Kwon Do in addition to the practical self-defense aspects it teaches. There were a variety of students on the team ranging from white to black belt.
Membership at the studio continued to grow, and the Roses developed a large instructing staff to assist them with sharing the Tae Kwon Do philosophy and benefits which can last a lifetime. Grandmaster Ronald Rose states Tae Kwon Do can be enjoyed as a physical and mental art which is continuously challenging. He said the more one puts into the program, the more he/she will get out of it. He is an internationally credentialed, high ranking Grandmaster dedicated to teaching both the sport and art of Tae Kwon Do. Grandmaster Rose is a full-time instructor and a lifetime student of Tae Kwon Do. It is not unusual to see several Masters training and continuing to learn in the classes of KICKS.
